Smart meters

Enjoy hassle free energy

Smart meters are a great way to manage your energy. With a smart meter, your meter readings are sent directly to your energy supplier – meaning no more manual meter readings.

The major benefit of a smart meter over a regular analogue meter is that a smart meter comes with an In Home Display (IHD). This means you’ll have a display in your home which shows you how much energy you’re using and how much that is costing – enabling you to make better informed decisions about your energy use.

If you’d like to take more control over the energy usage in your home, a smart meter is the ideal solution for you.

How do smart meters work?

Smart meters connect wirelessly to both your energy supplier and to the In Home Display (IHD) unit.

The IHD sits in your home and allows you to see in real time how much energy you’re using, which gives you better control over your energy use. That means that it’s much easier for you to top up and control your energy use.

Because it’s also connected to your energy supplier, your smart meter will be sending constant updates on energy use, meaning you no longer have to submit manual meter readings.

What are the benefits of a smart meter?

With a smart meter, you get:

  • More control over your energy use – smart meters enable you to keep an eye on your household energy use and control those energy guzzling areas and appliances by using them more efficiently.
  • More control over your energy spending – your smart meter sends information to your IHD. This will display your current spending for credit customers as well as your credit levels if you are a prepayment customers. You can even programme your IHD to warn you if you’re approaching a credit limit.
  • Flexibility to top-up – If you’re a prepayment customer your smart Pay-As-You-Go top-up card can be used to top-up online, over the phone or at your nearest PayPoint retailer.

Top-up options for Pay-As-You-Go customers

In person

Take your top-up card to any PayPoint outlet. It is important that you keep the receipt issued to you at the PayPoint outlet. This is because there is sometimes a slight communication delay between the PayPoint terminal and your meter. If this happens you can use the code on your receipt to manually update your new credit onto the meter. However, this should rarely happen and usually everything should work properly.

Remember!

You may not be able to top up at your usual location as this will depend on whether that retailer is a PayPoint outlet. To find out where your nearest PayPoint retailer is please use their website: PayPoint.com.

Online

Over the phone

By text message

To use this service you must register for a White Rose Energy online account. This requires the input of the following details: your top-up card number, mobile phone number, and payment card information. Once you've set this up you will be able to top-up by sending a text message*. Click here to register for an account, if you haven't already done so, and please call our customer service team if you have any problems.

To top-up using this method simply open up a new text message draft and enter the word 'Pay', followed by your top-up card number, the amount you would like to top-up, and your 3-digit card security code, being sure to separate each element with a space. The text message should be sent to 0115 8241186.

The amount you have chosen to top-up by will be automatically sent to your meter and you will receive a text message receipt (please allow up to two hours for this to arrive). The receipt will include a 20, 40, or 60 digit ‘top-up code‘, which you can use to manually top-up the meter if the credit does not arrive at the meter automatically. However, this will only happen in very rare circumstances. if you don't know how to manually top-up the meter, please follow the instructions in your smart meter guide, which you should have received when your opened an account with White Rose Energy.

* Text messages are charged at your standard local network rate. Please note that you will need to send 2 separate text messages if you are topping-up both your gas and electricity supplies; one for each top-up card number.

** You can top-up in whole pounds only, i.e. no pence.

Minimum top-up

Remember!

The minimum top up amount per fuel is £5 so you’ll need to top up £5’s worth of gas and £5 of electricity to get started if you have a dual fuel supply.
